In addition to losing 173 wins to graduation, long time head Coach Ken Hoff stepped down as head coach in the off-season to take over at the Middle School. Even with the coaching change and the loss of some standout seniors, Ocean enters 2012 with expectations.
Down low, District champion Jason DaCruz returns and is joined by fellow starters Max Rallo and Jordan Eugenis who will remain at the 1 and 2 lineup spots for the Spartans. Highly touted freshman Zach Hertling is penciled in at 120 giving Ocean a very tough stretch from 106-126.
If there are any question marks going into the season for Ocean it is what will they get out of the middleweights. Region 6 runner-up Withler Marcelin is the anchor here in a group that is otherwise light on name recognition, but not on talent. Junior Nick Pappayliou managed to go 13-4 seeing spot duty behind Marcelin and the graduated Seth Rubel and PJ Parrino. There are also high expectations for junior Tommy Lyster and sophomore Danny Loizos.
Up top, Ocean closes with a great senior trio made up of Colton Bigelow (220) and Kyle Gora (Hwt), who both made it to Boardwalk Hall last season, and with the return of Sam Sottile (195) who won 16 bouts as a sophomore and missed almost all of 2011 with an injury.
Ocean is one of the teams that actually benefited from the weight changes with the addition of an extra upper weight to go along with the removal of a middleweight. They might be a hair behind the big dogs of A-South, but if this team stays healthy the potential is here to hang with just about anyone.
Wrestler To Watch - (Sr) Colton Bigelow
Bigelow got a tough draw in the opening elimination round of the State Tournament last season, dropping an OT decision to Absegami's Kevin Stadtmueller who went on to place 6th in the weight. A different draw and he may have found his way to the podium. With only one placewinner returning in his weight class this season, Bigelow will not only be a favorite to contend for a medal, but he has to be involved in the discussion for a spot at the very top of the podium as well.
